Above ground fuel tanks can be damaged by vehicles, tractors, and farm equipment if they are not adequately protected. Tanks are often located in high-traffic areas on farms and commercial properties where frequent vehicle movement increases the risk of accidental impact.

Damage to tanks can result in:

  • Fire or explosion hazards

What's the Risk?

Even a minor collision can have serious consequences.

  • Impact can cause tanks to shift or move from their original position.
  • Service lines may become damaged, leak, or break completely.
  • Severe impacts can compromise tank integrity and allow contents to escape.
  • Leaks and spills can create significant safety, environmental, and financial risks.

What Can Be Done?

If a tank is exposed to vehicle traffic, it should be protected with properly installed bollards or jersey barriers. This simple control can prevent serious incidents, protect workers and property, and reduce the risk of leaks, fires, explosions, and environmental damage.

Concrete Filled Bollards

  • 6” concrete filled schedule 80 steel pipe
  • At least 40” below grade
  • At least 30” above grade
  • 55” centre to centre or maximum of 49” between posts
  • Located 48”-66” from tank

Jersey Barriers

  • Minimum of 2,000 lbs
  • 24” wide at base, 6” wide at top
  • 36” high
  • Anchored with 24” long #6 re-bar
  • Maximum 49” between barriers
  • Located 48-66” from tank
