Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Home for Dinner Program

Recently, members of our underwriting team and broker partners at HUB International had the volunteer opportunity to cook and serve meals to families at RMHC Manitoba. Their Home for Dinner Program is an excellent way to offer RMHC Manitoba families the gift of togetherness while they enjoy a home-cooked meal.

Ronald McDonald House is a home away from home for rural Manitoban and out-of-province families with a child requiring treatment at a nearby hospital. The program operates for families 24/7, 365 days a year. The House is a warm, supportive, and welcoming space where families can stay close, be together, and connect in a compassionate and supportive environment.

This experience has not only supported our corporate values around community support but also presented the perfect opportunity for underwriters and brokers to connect outside of the workplace. In an era where corporate social responsibility is gaining prominence, the collaboration between Red River Mutual and HUB International is a shining example of how insurance companies and their brokerage partners can join forces to impact local communities positively.

Emi Hoeppner, Residential Underwriting Specialist, was a part of this experience. More recently, she found herself in a position where she got word from her daughter’s school that her daughter had injured herself. After spending time in the ER at the local hospital, they were advised that she had broken the growth plate in her foot and would require surgery in Winnipeg. The surgery was to happen on Monday, January 29, but it ended up being postponed until Tuesday.

Emi and her daughter spent this last night at Ronald McDonald House awaiting the call for her to come to the surgery. RMHC was available to her in a time of need.

“I couldn’t believe I was at RMHC so soon after volunteering there; it was a surreal experience! We were at the HSC Children’s ER until 11 pm Monday when we found out we would be staying for the night. Within half an hour, arrangements were made for us to stay at RMHC, and a short drive later, there we were!

We were greeted at the door by the same lady who worked with us when we volunteered the week before. We had a good laugh at how crazy it was that I was there again so soon and for a completely different reason! They were very accommodating, giving us recommendations on where to get food so late in the evening. They provided us with toiletries and even borrowed us a phone charger to use. As I had seen the week before, the facility is bright, clean, and well-designed. We slept comfortably, better preparing us for the long day we would have the next day.

I was so thankful to have a facility like RMHC at our disposal. It is conveniently located and well appointed, and the staff are friendly and accommodating! I’m hoping to have future opportunities to volunteer at this facility, especially now that I have experienced how much it helped us and made a stressful situation more bearable.”

The surgery was successful, and her daughter Elexis is now resting, feeling well, and learning to walk with her new crutches. This experience not only highlights the importance of community support and underwriter-broker relationships, but also further validates the importance of the services that Ronald McDonald House provides to the local community.
