The Southquill Health Area Foodbank works to fill bellies and hearts in the community surrounding Erickson, Manitoba. It’s a volunteer-run collaboration between Rolling River First Nation, Erickson’s Services for Seniors, and other volunteers who want to bring people together to distribute food packages, stage workshops, and hold presentations relating to food security in the area. The foodbank also holds markets for local food producers during the harvest season.
It’s in this spirit that the volunteers are joining together to create a community garden in downtown Erickson that can be used to supply the foodbank, educate residents about growing their own food, and welcome everyone in an outdoor gathering space.
Red River Mutual is helping the Main Street Green Space – Southquill Foodbank Community Garden spruce up their story by providing $16,000 that will be used to properly landscape the garden to prevent runoff and soil erosion, level and re-gravel the parking pad to accommodate increased visitor traffic, and add elements like picnic tables, signage, a tool shed, and more. The space will have room to grow within the community.
