Always store gasoline in a ULC or CSA approved container, in a cool, well-ventilated, secure area away from any heat or ignition sources (pilot lights, electric motors, heaters, stoves, etc.). Be sure to leave room in the container to allow for some expansion.
Keep gasoline containers tightly sealed and handle them
gently to avoid spills.
Never store gasoline inside the home or garage as vapors are heavier than air and can travel along the floor to ignition sources. For fire safety, store gasoline in a detached garage or shed and only store the minimum amount of gas required – usually 20 litres or less.
Never siphon gasoline by mouth as it can be harmful or fatal if swallowed. If gasoline is swallowed, never induce vomiting – seek medical attention immediately.
Never refuel lawnmowers, weed trimmers, tillers or any other piece of equipment while it is still hot.
Use gasoline as a motor fuel only. Never use gasoline as a cleaning agent, degreaser or to clean your hands.
Never use gasoline in place of kerosene or charcoal lighting fluid.
Do not use gasoline as a weed killer or pesticide. While it may kill weeds, it can pose devastating environmental consequences for the soil, which can also extend to the groundwater or storm sewer.
Minor spills should be absorbed with paper, sawdust or rags. Larger spills may be contained and collected. Check with local authorities to determine requirements for safe disposal. Never dispose of spilled gasoline or cleaning materials on the ground or into your garbage, drains, toilets or sewers, as it might cause a fire or seep into groundwater or waterways.
Never use water on a gasoline fire (Class B fire). The use of water will spread the fire. Always keep a Class ABC portable fire extinguisher at hand in case of emergency.

Have an Action Plan including adult supervision, an emergency signal, safety equipment and emergency procedures.
Establish pool rules. These can include: swim with a buddy, children must have an adult with them at all times, and no glass containers around the pool.
Lifejackets or Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) should be worn by weak or non-swimmers.
Few backyard pools are safe for diving - swimmers should always enter the water feet-first.
Keep the deck clear of toys and debris to prevent trip and fall injuries.
Enroll your children in Red Cross swimming lessons.
Take your children with you if you have to leave the pool for any reason.

Never permit children to play on a wet trampoline.
Children under the age of six shouldn’t be allowed on trampolines due to a higher risk of injury.
No more than one person at a time. Multiple jumpers increase the chances of collision and injury.
No rough play while on the trampoline.
No older kids on the trampoline while little ones are using it.
Always make sure there is a responsible adult supervising children on a trampoline.
To prevent unauthorized access, consider locating the trampoline in a fenced area.

Never leave wet rags in a pile. Used rags should be spread out in a safe area to dry and weighed down so they don’t blow away.
Store the dry rags in ULC certified, non-combustible metal container with a self-closing lid. Fill the container with a water and detergent solution which will break down the oils.
Keep containers of oily rags in a cool place out of direct sunlight, and away from any heat sources. Check with your city or municipality for disposal instructions.
Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. Since manufacturers use different oils in their products, it’s important to follow their warnings and disposal instructions.
Flammable and combustible liquids should not be used near an open flame. Do not smoke when working with these liquids.
If you spill liquids on your clothing, remove the items and dry them outdoors. Once dry, the clothing can be laundered.
Keep liquids in their original containers with lids or caps tightly sealed. Never store liquids in glass containers.
Never use gasoline as a cleaner or to break down grease.
Store gasoline only in a container that is designed for that purpose and keep the container tightly capped when not in use.
Never store gasoline containers in an occupied building. Gasoline should be stored in a detached garage, shed or outdoors, away from any heat sources.

Candles are enjoyable, calming and fragrant, but don't ever forget that when you burn them, you are dealing with fire. Always take proper precautions to prevent your enjoyable experience from turning into a disaster.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, twice the average monthly number of candle fires occurs in December. Christmas Day brings the most candle fires of the whole year; Christmas Eve and New Year's Day tie for second place. Half were caused by leaving candles unattended, and 5% came from someone playing with candles.

Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Position candles well away from flammable objects and materials like curtains, lampshades and plants, and well away from any possible contact by pets or children.
Place candles on heat-resistant surfaces which will not transmit heat to the furniture on which they are placed. Candles should also be placed in heat resistant bowls that will catch dripping wax and be secured in an appropriate holder so it can't be knocked over.
Never light a candle in a situation in which you might fall asleep before blowing it out.
Install a smoke detector in every room where candles are burned.
Keep candle wicks trimmed. This is essential for the candle to burn cleanly, safely and without smoking. Trim the wick to about 1/4" every time you burn.
Keep candles out of drafty locations.
Keep wick trimmings and other debris out of the pool of melted wax.
Never move a lighted candle.
When blowing out a candle, hold your index finger in front of the flame and blow at it. Air will flow around your finger, extinguish the candle from both sides, and prevent hot wax from splattering.

Have your wood stove or fire place inspected annually by a certified chimney specialist.
Have cracked or missing chimney bricks and mortar and corroded flashing repaired.
Remove ash buildup regularly and store in a covered metal container.
Never restrict air supply to wood stoves or fireplaces as it may cause the buildup of creosote and increase risk of a chimney fire.
Keep the hearth free of debris and materials that may catch fire easily.
Install smoke detectors on every floor of your home. Change and test batteries at least twice a year.
Keep a fire extinguisher close by and make sure everyone in your household knows how to use it in the event of fire.

Do no discard cigarettes in vegetation, such as mulch, potted plants or landscaping, peat moss, dried grasses, leaves or other things that could ignite easily.
Before you throw away butts and ashes, make sure they are out by dousing them in water or sand, and dispose of them using a metal container.
If you smoke, be alert! Do not smoke if you are sleepy, have taken medications that make you drowsy or have consumed alcohol. Never smoke in bed.
Never smoke or allow others to smoke where medical oxygen is used. Medical oxygen can cause materials to ignite more easily and make fires burn at a faster rate and hotter than normal.

string(3240) "CSA offers the following tips to help prevent unexpected failures of metal sheathed heating elements in portable electric heaters that could lead to electrical shock or fires:
Selection: Before buying a heater, ensure it has been tested and certified to the applicable standard by an accredited certification organization, such as CSA, and that it is suitable for its intended use.
Instructions: Always follow the manufacturer's operating instructions and warnings before using a space heater. If you do not have or understand the instructions, contact the manufacturer.
Temporary Use: Electric portable fan space heaters are designed to provide temporary warmth only. They should never be permanently installed or mounted and should not be operated continuously over extended periods of time. Portable heaters should never be suspended from ceilings or rafters or in any other manner.
Tampering: Never hard-wire (removing the plug cap) a portable heater directly to a power supply or modify or tamper with the construction of the unit.
Ventilation/Air: Never block a heater's air flow to or from the fan. Obstruction of a heater's air intake or exhaust could lead to overheating and a potential fire hazard. Do not insert or allow foreign objects to enter any air vent as this may cause a potential for electric shock, fire, or damage to the equipment and never use the heater to dry clothes, boots, or other items of apparel.
Electrical Connection: Before turning the heater on, make sure the power supply cord's plug cap is fully inserted into the outlet. To avoid overheating and a potential fire hazard, do not use an extension cord with the heater.
Breakers and GFCIs: Use of an electrical outlet with a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) or a ground fault protected circuit is recommended. Only use a properly rated fused circuit or a breaker protected circuit for powering the unit as indicated by the manufacturer's instructions.
Fire Hazards & Combustibles: To avoid the risk of fire, do not use heating equipment near combustible surfaces. Heaters should only be installed on a noncombustible surface that extends a minimum of 1.5 meters beyond the front of the heater. Never operate a heater near flammable materials, chemicals or vapours.
Maintenance & Storage: Ensure heaters have had sufficient time to cool down after use before moving or storing and be sure to store heaters in a dry location. Check regularly if there are rust marks or degradation signs on the heating element and follow the manufacturer's instruction for proper maintenence and replacement. Do not use the heater if it has been exposed to any mechanical damage. Periodically clean the heater of any dust or particle accumulation. If you suspect the heater has been damaged or does not seem to work properly, discontinue use and refer to the manufacturer's instructions.
Caution! Do not leave a heater unattended while in operation.
General requirements for installation of cord-connected heating units at all construction sites:
Only install heaters approved by an accredited approval agency such as CSA or cUL
Follow manufacturer's installation instructions.
Refer to the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), Part 1, C22.1-09 Section 76 for wiring installation.
Wiring installation of cord-connected portable construction heaters:
Do not remove or tamper with the heater's power cord or attachment plug.
The female receptacle must be in an approved enclosure or surface mount.
AC-90, Teck, -90 or Cab-Tire of appropriate copper AWG size must be used to connect all heaters.
All connections must terminate in approved junction boxes, wiring devices or panel boards.
All wiring and equipment must be protected by a properly rated circuit breaker or fuse.
NMD-90 or NMW-U are no longer permitted as a wiring method, unless the installation complies with Sections 12 and 76 of the CEC C22.1-09.

Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional.
Do not use the dryer without a lint filter.
Make sure you clean the lint filter before or after each load of laundry. Remove lint that has collected around the drum.
Vent the dryer outdoors using rigid or semi-rigid metal material to sustain proper air flow and drying time. Flexible vinyl or mylar foil dryer ducts impede airflow and trap lint. These materials can melt or cause a fire and should be replaced with metal ducts.
Make sure the air exhaust vent pipe is not restricted and the outdoor vent flaps open freely when the dryer is operating. In winter, check to be sure the outdoor vent flaps are not covered by snow or ice.
Once a year, or more often if you notice that it is taking longer than normal for your clothes to dry, clean lint out of the vent pipe or have a dryer lint removal service do it for you.
Keep dryers in good working order. Gas dryers should be inspected by a professional to make sure that the gas line and connection are intact and free of leaks.
Make sure the right electrical plug and outlet are used and that the machine is connected properly. Dryers should be properly grounded.
Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and don’t overload your dryer.
Turn the dryer off if you leave home or when you go to bed.
As dryers create a lot of heat, keep the area around the dryer clear of boxes, cleaning supplies, clothing, papers or other combustible materials.
Let clothes that have been soaked with flammable liquids like gasoline or paint thinner dry completely before washing and drying as usual.

Washing machine hoses usually fail where the metal coupling crimps the hose end. Over time, flowing water sharpens the metal edges, which can cut the inside of the hose, leading to rupture. Keeping the washer valves open when the washer is not in use is also a cause of hose and valve failure, as constant high water pressure is applied to these components.

Check that hoses are tightly connected to the water supply valves.
Look for signs of unusual wear like dryness, cracking or swollen points, and replace immediately if cut, frayed or damaged.
There may be signs of rust, corrosion, or leaking around the hose ends before they burst.
Make sure your washing machine is at least 4" from the wall to prevent the hoses from bending and kinking. This can restrict water flow and increase the pressure on the hose.
Also examine the drain hose at the back of the washer, which is inserted into the main drain line. Make sure the hose is secured and won't dislodge as the washer agitates or drains.

If a washing machine is unattended and the valves cannot be closed when a hose fails, the discharge of water can be devastating. It can collapse floors and flood areas below and adjacent to the laundry room. Implementing the suggestions below can help protect your home from the threat of water damage.

Surge protectors, power strips or extension cords are not a substitute for permanent wiring.
Be sure to use a UL or CSA approved device. These have been tested for safety and effective electronics protection.
Use only surge protectors or power strips that have an internal circuit breaker. These units will trip the breaker if the power strip is over loaded or shorted to prevent overheating.
Multi‐outlet devices should only be used for computers, audio and video equipment and low amperage office equipment.
Do not locate in an area where the unit would be covered with carpet, furniture, clothing or any other items that will limit or prevent air circulation.
Do not use multi‐outlet devices or extension cords in an area where they will be exposed to moisture.
Each cord should be plugged directly into a structurally mounted electrical receptacle and should not be chained together or fed from another extension cord.
There should only be one surge protector or power strip plugged into a single duplex electrical outlet.
Ground pins on the plugs and the devices plugged into the receptacles must be intact.
Units must be free of cracks, splits, fraying and other damage as a result of general wear and tear.
Cords must not be coiled or looped when in use.
Do not run through doorways, windows or holes in the wall, floor or ceiling.
If the multi‐outlet device experiences a fault, the device should be tested by qualified personal prior to placing the device back into service.
If at any time the surge protector or plug strip is hot to the touch, remove and replace the unit immediately.
